How to Measure Your Waist Correctly

Step-by-step guide to measuring waist circumference at the navel with a soft tape.

WHtR is only as good as your waist measurement. This is the single largest source of variance in the ratio, and getting it right takes 30 seconds once you know the protocol.

What you need

  • A soft, non-stretch measuring tape (a sewing tape is ideal; a metal builder's tape is not).
  • A mirror, or a friend to check the tape is level.

The protocol

  1. Stand upright with your feet together and your arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Locate the level of your navel. This is the standard WHtR measurement location. An acceptable alternative is the midpoint between the bottom of your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest).
  3. Wrap the tape horizontally around your midsection at that level. The tape must be level all the way around โ€” check the back with a mirror or ask someone to verify.
  4. The tape should be snug against your skin but not compressing it. You should be able to slip one finger between the tape and your skin.
  5. Exhale normally. Do not suck in. Do not push out. Read the measurement at the end of the exhale.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring at the narrowest point of the torso (flatters the reading; not the WHtR standard).
  • Measuring at hip level (this is a different metric โ€” waist-to-hip ratio).
  • Measuring over clothes.
  • Holding your breath or sucking in.

Consistency matters

Whatever location and time of day you choose, use the same one every time. Waist circumference can fluctuate 1-2 cm within a day due to hydration, bloating and posture. Monthly measurements under identical conditions capture real trend, not noise.
